The Board consists of nearly 50 lawyers and non-lawyers who are regional and national leaders in the legal profession, the business, philanthropic and academic communities. The Board is a well-established and influential group, providing guidance in key areas, including fundraising, employment and marketing. Dean Emeritus Howard Glickstein is credited with the development of a Board of Visitors at Touro Law, an initiative he began in 1987 shortly after he began his tenure as dean. “I recognized that a Board of prominent local attorneys would be a good idea to raise awareness and visibility of our young law school as we were trying to establish ourselves on Long Island,” recalled Dean Glickstein. “I am pleased that the Board has grown to have such stature and influence over time and includes so many prominent leaders in the community. As a former Dean, I know the value in having a sounding board of professionals to whom I could rely on for counsel and advice.” The Board’s first chair was Joshua M. Pruzansky of Bracken Margolin Besunder LLP, succeeded by James LaRocca, former head of Long Island Association. The Board transitioned to its current title, the Board of Governors, under Dean Lawrence Raful in 2004. During this time, the Board gained new members and started to develop sub- committees to provide focused input and feedback in areas critical to the school’s growth, but remains a non-fiduciary Board as it was originally established. It was then that Howard M. Stein, managing partner at Certilman Balin Adler & Hyman LLP, was appointed Board chair, a position he still holds. Mr. Stein stated, “I am proud to have served as the Board Chair as we gained status and made meaningful contributions to the Law Center. I believe that the time and effort of each of my fellow Board members has a positive impact on the law school. I have been honored to lead this prominent group of talented and influential people to provide guidance and assistance to Touro Law, a worthy institution in the community.” The Board is called upon for advice and consultation, providing leadership and employment in the legal marketplace, fundraising and helping to meet the needs of the legal community in terms of ensuring Touro students are prepared for the real practice of law. Long-time Board Member Alan Fuchsberg, partner at the New York City based Jacob Fucshberg Law Firm stated, “My family has long been associated with Touro College and Law Center. I value being a Board member because it allows me to have a voice in the growth and development of a school that is so important to me.” Many of the current Board Members are managing partners of major Long Island law firms, while others are General Counsel of Fortune 500 corporations. The Board does not require that members be Touro Law alumni, a unique distinction C O U N S E L T O T H E L A W C E N T E R
