HAROLD ABRAMSON Professor of Law Professional Activities: Professor Abramson is completing the second year of his term as the first Scholar- in Residence ((SIR) for the International Academy of Mediators, a global professional organization of primarily full-time commercial mediators. He is working on several projects and presented at the IAM conference in Baltimore in October, which was the first- of-a-kind program he designed to bridge the gap between academia and mediation practitioners. He presented a four-hour long program on mediation advocacy and intercultural mediations to practicing attorneys and mediators in a program sponsored by the University of La Trobe in Melbourne. UNLV announced that the Board of Regents approved Professor Abramson as one of the first two Senior Scholars in ADR at the UNLV law school. In June, he taught a one-week mediation advocacy course at UNLV. Professor Abramson presented in two advanced mediation programs in November and December, and presented on mediation advocacy to the Board of the National Conflict Resolution Center in San Diego in July. He conducted a two-day mediation advocacy training program for the bar association for the solicitors in Hong Kong. Professor Abramson served as the keynote speaker for the annual ADR Institute sponsored by the Minnesota State Bar Association. The conference was attended by more than 200 attorneys. His keynote was based on how to be an effective mediation advocate. He also served as the luncheon speaker, where he discussed Nelson Mandela as negotiator. He presented remarks to the students in the Hamline Law School ADR Certificate Program in October. In December, after completing a six month security clearance process, Professor Abramson started working for FEMA as a process design consultant to advise on process improvements for handling mass claims arising from a single disaster. He completed his recommendations and helped facilitate a buy- in process for the process improvements. He continued his work with the U.S. State Department, IMI (International Mediation Institute) based in the Hague and UNCITRAL (60 delegations selected by the General Assembly) on drafting a treaty for enforcing mediated settlement agreements cross-border. Professor Abramson has been deeply involved with this initiative from the beginning when it was first proposed for discussion in Spring, 2014. Since then, he has participated in informal meetings and attended three formal meetings of the UN drafting group (the 60 delegations) including presenting at the meeting on one difficult substantive issue and designing two mediation educational programs for the delegates. He also participated in two educational programs for the public, one in Delhi at an international mediation summit. The panel was chaired by the Secretariat of UNCITRAL and a second for the ABA Section on Dispute Resolution. The panel included the Chair of the UNCITRAL drafting group and a member of the U.S. Delegation. He served as a mediator in the ICC International Mediation Representation Competition – Eleventh Annual in Paris, France in February. Professor Abramson is an active member of the New York State Bar Association-Section on Dispute Resolution. He presented two programs on mediation advocacy, one at the annual meeting in January and one at the first regional ADR program, held at Touro Law in March. He also presented on mediation ethics in a program sponsored by the Diversity Committee in April. Professor Abramson was an active participate in the 18th Annual Conference of the ABA Section of Dispute Resolution in New York City in April, moderating two panels of U.S. and international participants. He served as keynote speaker at the New Jersey State Bar Association ADR Program in June where he delivered remarks on international mediation and served as the luncheon speaker on Nelson Mandela as Negotiator.
