W W W. TO U R O L AW. E D U 15 KENNETH ROSENBLUM While anchoring live criminal trial coverage at News 12 Long Island nearly three decades ago, Ken Rosenblum saw an advertisement for a position at Touro Law Center that sparked his interest. Following military service (as a former U.S. Army JAG officer, war crimes investigator and military judge), teaching broadcast journalism at RTP (the national television network of Portugal), and working on-camera at News 12 Long Island, Rosenblum embraced the opportunity to further his career in an educational environment. And, in November 1990, he proudly joined the Touro Law Center administration as Assistant Dean for Student Services/Director of International Programs. Now, after more than 25 years of commitment to Touro Law Center, Rosenblum is closing this chapter of his life, leaving as Associate Dean for Administration, Visiting Professor of Law, Director of the Veterans’ and Servicemembers’ Rights Clinic, and Chief Operating Officer of the law school. His time as a member of the Touro Law Center family has been rich with impactful highlights, such as reviving the school’s Veterans’ Clinic assisting homeless and at-risk veterans re- assimilate into the community; playing a role in moving Touro Law Center to its current home in Central Islip; serving as Chair of the Association of American Law Schools (AALS) Section on Student Services; and being a founding member of the AALS Section on Academic Support. In addition to the collaboration with and camaraderie among the administration, faculty and staff, Rosenblum says he will most miss the energy and inspiration he draws from students. “Their thirst for knowledge and drive to succeed kept me young, and they gave me a chance to leave ‘footprints,’ influencing how law will be practiced and justice pursued in the future.” As Rosenblum embarks on his next journey, he intends to relax, recharge and tackle the ever-growing reading pile that has amassed over the past few years. He also plans to continue writing about Long Island legal history, remain active in improving Veterans Treatment Courts, and stay connected to the law school that allowed him to “create ripples” while touching so many lives. APRIL SCHWARTZ A life-long love of libraries and deep desire to nurture the intellectual pursuit of learning are what set April Schwartz on her professional journey—one that has lasted more than four decades, including the last 11 years as Associate Dean, Associate Professor of Law and Director of the Gould Law Library. When Schwartz came to Touro Law Center in 2005, the law school and library were housed in a junior high school building in Huntington. Schwartz immediately began crafting a plan to further develop the library into an even stronger facility for Touro’s student body—and in 2007, the Law Center moved to its current home in Central Islip. Under her steadfast guidance, the library now boasts more study space, a large (and continually growing) collection of research material, and new sections for rare books, archives and Judaica material. Without question, her Touro legacy is completely interwoven in the library and everything that facility symbolizes, but over time her responsibilities expanded beyond the books. While at Touro, Schwartz taught Advanced Legal Research courses every year, participated in law school administration as a member of the Dean’s management team, and served on the committee for the law school’s new website roll-out. Retiring isn’t an easy decision, especially when it means leaving something you adore, but Schwartz felt it was time to make room for new innovative leaders in librarianship. As for the future, she is already busy—and the pursuit of knowledge is part of her plan. Schwartz will relocate to Manhattan to be closer to her daughter and grandchild, and she also intends to learn Dutch as she has a child and grandchildren living in Amsterdam. Schwartz began her career as a children’s librarian and will no doubt continue to incorporate that love of storytelling in her post-Touro career. She believes there are no better places than libraries. “Living and working in one every day for so many years has been a magnificent experience for me. They are precious and must always be nurtured and preserved.” LEWIS SILVERMAN Lewis Silverman joined the Touro Law family in 1995, after a career that included services as an Assistant Suffolk County Attorney assigned to the Family Court Bureau, including unit head of the Child Abuse/Neglect Unit and Deputy Bureau Chief of the Family Court Bureau. From 1985 until joining Touro Law Center in 1995, he was a hearing examiner in Suffolk County Family Court where he presided at hearings to determine child support and spousal support obligations. He served as President of the New York State Hearing Examiners Association from 1988 to 1995 and had numerous decisions published by the New York Law Journal. Silverman has also served as chair of the New York State Bar Association’s Committee on Social Services, as an officer of the Suffolk Academy of Law, and the first chair of the Suffolk County Bar Association’s Family Court Committee. There is no doubt that “Prof Lew” was dedicated to his cause. When he came to Touro Law, he brought both passion and dedication to his role as Associate Professor of Law and Director of the Family Law Clinic. In addition to his duties as Director of the Family Law Clinic, Silverman also taught courses in Family Law, Sexual Orientation and Law, Civil Procedure, and Pre-Trial Litigation, and served as faculty advisor to the Moot Court Board. Silverman has published several articles and presented at numerous conferences and programs on topics on family law and civil rights for sexual minorities. He has served as a resource for the press and been quoted frequently in print and television news. He has also been recognized three times by the Suffolk County Bar Pro Bono Foundation for his pro bono activities. Many students and alumni have great law school memories of their time in the clinic or classroom with Professor Silverman and wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors!
