Why I Give... Helen Lefkowitz ’88 “My late husband Joel and I were both brought up to be philanthropic and community minded. The idea of giving to charity was all around us—we didn’t think of it then as philanthropy, back then it was just doing the right thing—the thing that was expected of us. Both my mother and father were active in the community and supported the causes they felt were important. My parents taught me their values—and among those values were that we must give to those who need our help; if you have, you give—it’s that simple. I like helping young people. I already have two scholarships at Syracuse, my undergraduate alma mater; and now a scholarship at Touro Law. When the Law Center reached out to me, and I was asked to make this gift I thought it would be a wonderful thing to do. It was very much in line with my values and the concepts I care about—helping people who need my help, education, and giving back to a community that nurtured me. I hope that one day, the individual students who benefit from the Scholarship will be in a position to “pay it forward” and help others in a similar manner. I would like to get to know those students who are the recipients—I think it would be great to have conversations and see how they are progressing in their careers.” 22 THE TOURO LAWYER | S P R I N G 2017 HONOR ROLL of DONORS * Includes payments towards a multi-year major gift pledge † Deceased Legacy Society Howard A.
